Munya Chimba: Transforming African Logistics and Retail

Munya Chimba’s professional journey is a testament to vision, resilience, and strategic execution. From his early days as an accounts clerk to founding SITT Group, Chimba has consistently demonstrated the ability to turn challenges into opportunities, building enterprises that not only thrive but redefine the industries they operate in. For investors, business leaders, and entrepreneurs across Africa, his career offers powerful lessons in growth, leadership, and market innovation.

Building a Strong Foundation

Chimba’s career is rooted in a solid educational and professional background. After excelling at Kutama High School with A-Level passes in Accounting, Literature, and Management of Business, he pursued a Bachelor of Accounting at the University of Witwatersrand. Early exposure to financial systems and an aptitude for numbers provided him with the technical foundation necessary for a successful career in finance and operations.

He began his professional journey in 2006 as an Accounts Clerk at Frontline Cash & Carry, quickly mastering the fundamentals of financial management. His precision and work ethic led to a role at Equity Aviation Services, where he managed creditor reconciliations and payment preparations – tasks that honed both his technical and analytical skills.

Financial Leadership at Sanlam

In 2007, Chimba joined Sanlam Developing Markets, part of one of Africa’s most respected financial services groups. Over seven years, he advanced from Accounts Payable Clerk to Financial Controller, overseeing budgeting, variance analysis, and general ledger operations. He also played a key role in implementing new financial systems, demonstrating the ability to manage complex processes and deliver precise reporting.

These years were formative, shaping his strategic mindset and leadership approach – skills that would later underpin his entrepreneurial ventures.

Scaling Retail at Shingai Group

Chimba’s leadership prowess became even more evident when he joined Shingai Group in 2014 as Head of Operations. Initially responsible for SPSK Enterprises, a supplier of Zimbabwean goods to South Africa, he envisioned and launched African Basket in 2016, a retail brand that quickly became a household name in the ethnic food sector.

Under his guidance, African Basket grew from a single store in Midrand to 16 stores across three provinces by 2022. He also spearheaded a state-of-the-art milling operation producing over 20 tonnes of mealie meal daily. Chimba’s ability to balance strategy with operational execution was central to this rapid expansion.

SITT Group: Bringing Vision to Life

In 2022, Chimba founded SITT Group, a multifaceted enterprise specializing in logistics management, retail consulting, and property management. The company is designed to tackle the complex challenges of cross-border trade and retail operations across Africa.

The logistics division ensures seamless freight forwarding, truck management, SARS compliance, and cross-border clearance, providing businesses with end-to-end supply chain solutions. Meanwhile, the retail consulting arm helps clients optimize procurement, pricing strategies, and daily operations, enabling measurable growth and efficiency.

Lessons in Leadership and Growth

Munya Chimba’s career is more than a record of professional success – it is a masterclass in resilience, vision, and execution. His ability to scale operations, lead diverse teams, and innovate in competitive markets underscores why SITT Group is a trusted partner for businesses navigating Africa’s complex trade landscape.

Chimba continues to expand SITT Group’s footprint, creating opportunities and driving value across borders. His journey demonstrates that with strategic thinking, determination, and relentless focus on excellence, it is possible to build a lasting legacy – one that transforms industries, empowers communities, and advances African trade and retail.
