Regional progress is easiest to argue about and hardest to measure, which is why the headline figures from the SADC Council deserve a closer look than a summit communiqué usually gets. Three numbers, reported at the same Pretoria session, sketch where the bloc actually stands on connectivity and power — and where the work still sits.
The Council noted that internet penetration across the region reached 54%, that over 14,000 MW of new generation capacity had been added, and that the share of renewables in the energy mix had risen to 38%. Each number cuts two ways. A 54% internet reach means a slim majority is now connected — and that close to half the region still is not, a digital divide that maps onto the rural-urban gap Zimbabwe knows well. Over 14 GW of new capacity is a serious build-out for a region long defined by load-shedding, yet demand keeps climbing alongside it.
The 38% renewables share is the figure with the most momentum behind it. It signals that the energy mix is shifting from a fossil-and-hydro base towards solar and other renewables fast enough to register at regional scale — the supply-side counterpart to the access and diversification goals set at Victoria Falls weeks earlier. For an operator in Harare, the read is practical: connectivity and power are improving on a regional trendline, but the gap between 54% and universal access, and between 14 GW added and demand still unmet, is precisely the space where the next decade of infrastructure investment will be made. Numbers like these are not a victory lap; they are a map of the work that remains.
